George Hubbard Payson was installed as pastor of FPCN in October 1882, after John P. Knox died. The following year, a Mary Payson, perhaps his wife, joined the church. After a pastorate of seven years, he accepted a call from the First Presbyterian Church of Rahway, New Jersey, where he remained from 1890 to 1904.
