FPCN Takes Part in Sacred Sites Weekend May 16-17

Created: Friday, May 1, 2015

FPCN will again be one of a number of historic and beautiful churches throughout the state to take part in the New York State Landmarks Conservancy's Sacred Sites Weekend. The church's Open House will be held over two days: Sat. May 16 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and Sun. May 17 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

Both days will have talks on the 363 year history and the architecture of the present and fifth church, erected 1893-95. The church, our 1907 manse, and 1937 church house are all on The National Register of Historic Places. FPCN has also been named a Presbyterian National Historic Site and is the fourth oldest Presbyterian church in the United States, having begun in 1652, not far from its present site. A display of historic photos and documents will be ongoing both days, along with some more recent photos of members.  After the talks, a short walking tour of historic spots nearby, some church related, will be held. Some people will get a chance to ring our old bell, from 1787. It was placed in our prior church right after the American Revolution and still rings strongly today, calling people to worship as it did after the Revolution!

On Sun., May 17 we also will be visited during the 10:45 church service by Rev. Charles L. Sorg, our pastor here from 1965 to 1992. He is an important part of our history, taking our church into the modern age and helping us become the welcoming diverse congregation it is today. Visitors are also invited to attend the service.
